Donald F. "Shag" Ungerer

Donald F. “Shag” Ungerer, 86, of Hawkeye, died Monday, July 7, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Home in West Union.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye with Rev. David R. Nelson officiating.  Interment will follow at Hawkeye Cemetery.  Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 9th at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye and for one hour preceding services at the church on Thursday. 

Donald Frederick, son of Albert and Frieda Niemann Ungerer, was born August 16, 1927, near Hawkeye in rural Fayette County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. He received his education in the rural schools and graduated from Hawkeye High School in 1945. In the fall of 1945, Shag entered the U.S. Navy. He was a lifelong farmer and lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye where he served on various committees and the men’s group. He was very active in the Conservation Club and the Hawkeye Senior Citizens, as well as the Farm Bureau. He also served on the Hawkeye Co-op board. In his earlier years, he enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling, and for many years, pitched horseshoes at the Fayette County Fair.  Following the death of his parents, Shag assumed the position as head of the Ungerer family.

Shag is survived by two brothers, Mervin (Kate) Ungerer and Harold (Barbara) Ungerer , both of Hawkeye; three sisters, Doris Homewood of West Union, Phyllis Plaster of Denver, and Dorothy (Paul) Boess of Hawkeye; his close friend, Lois Heick of Hawkeye; nine nephews; five nieces; two step nieces; and numerous great nieces and great nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert; a sister, Louanne, who died in early childhood; one nephew; three nieces; two brothers-in-law, Charles Plaster and Charles Homewood; and one sister-in-law, Nora Ungerer.
